Whizwheel… Ugh

June 21st, 2006

I’m not afraid of the old fashioned ways. My car is rear-wheel drive, one of my computers has a 5 1/4″ drive, and I’ve even made a working Enigma machine from a Pringles can, paper and sticky tape. However, studying for my PPL Navigation exam has meant getting to know this little monster.

Whizwheel

I can get Met and Notams via the web rather than a teleprinter, I can use VHF RT to talk to ATC rather than morse code, yet I can’t use an electronic calculator for the Nav exam. Hmmm.. What if I bought three electronic calculators just incase one fails?

Anyway, if my aircraft has 5 imperial gallons left in the tanks, and I want to fly a trip of 237km, with a 8 knot headwind component in an aircraft that cruises at a speed of 93mph and consumes 6.4US Gal per hour, how many litres must the refueller supply to have 4.5 gallons left at the destination? Dunno, but I’ll work it out in a few minutes with the whizwheel shortly :-)
